The initiation of ginger production in 2022 under the Adolescent and Youth program, in partnership with UNFPA, marked a significant development for the small town of Krabonso in the Kintampo South District of the Bono Eastern Region. This collaborative effort aimed to empower young girls by providing them with training and opportunities in ginger processing, thereby creating sustainable livelihoods and economic opportunities within the community.
Initially, ten girls were selected to undergo training in various aspects of ginger processing. The training encompassed techniques for processing ginger into different products such as powder, millet drinks, and pastries. Additionally, the girls learned to create value-added products by combining ginger with other local ingredients like garlic and prekese, resulting in unique and marketable goods.
Following the training, the girls embarked on the production and packaging of ginger-based products, targeting both local and regional markets. They packaged the ginger powder meticulously, ensuring high-quality presentation suitable for sales in local markets. Moreover, they expanded their market reach by transporting their products to larger cities like Accra and other regions across the country, tapping into broader consumer bases.
The impact of the program extended beyond the initial training phase, as the girls who completed the program continued ginger processing independently. They established their own businesses, further contributing to the local economy and providing employment opportunities within the community. Furthermore, stakeholders, including individuals and organizations, showed support by patronizing the girls’ products and recognizing the value and quality they offered. They were awarded by the minister.
Participation in events such as Kayayei fairs provided additional avenues for showcasing and selling their products, allowing the girls to network with a wider audience and garner more exposure for their businesses.
Overall, the introduction of ginger production through the Adolescent and Youth program in collaboration with UNFPA has not only empowered young girls in Krabonso but has also stimulated economic growth and entrepreneurship within the community. By harnessing the potential of local resources and providing targeted support and training, this initiative has created a sustainable pathway to prosperity for the participants and the broader community alike.
