Mavis Owusua’s journey from adversity to empowerment is truly inspiring. Coming from Bono East as a teenage mother and a school dropout in SHS 2, she found herself trapped in an abusive relationship, feeling devastated and devoid of hope. However, her life took a significant turn when she joined the PAYDP (Purim African Youth Development Platform) under the Adolescent Program funded by UNFPA and Canada.
Through this program, Mavis underwent a transformative journey of self-discovery and empowerment. She received training on understanding her human rights, cultivating confidence, and finding her voice to speak out. This empowerment not only gave her the strength to recognize and address the abuse in her relationship but also provided her with the support and resources to return to school. She became a RHESY facilitator and educated her peers on Sexual Reproductive Health. STIs and SGBV.
Now enrolled at Krobo Nursing Training College, Mavis is actively pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse, symbolizing her resilience and determination to overcome obstacles. Moreover, her journey has come full circle as she now serves as a facilitator within her community. By sharing her experiences and knowledge, she empowers young girls to stand up for themselves, educates them on Sexual and reproductive health, and provides them with the tools to navigate life’s challenges. Mavis also undertakes a beads business to help her support herself in school. Mavis said, “Through the PAYDP programme my partner stopped abusing because I know where and who to report sexual and gender-based violence cases “.
Mavis said “Through programmes initiated by PAYDP I have been able to speak on my abuse and also encourage my peers on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence”.
