Ramata Fuseini’s journey exemplifies strength, empowerment, and transformation. Despite facing significant challenges as a teenage mother and school dropout, she refused to succumb to despair and found hope through the support and opportunities provided by the Purim African Youth Development Platform (PAYDP) under Adolescent Girls programme.
Before encountering PAYDP, Ramata’s life seemed bleak. She had become a teenage mother, abandoned by her parents, and had lost faith in her future. However, in 2019, everything changed when she was introduced to PAYDP. Through the programme, Ramata and other girls were enrolled in a bead-making school which gave her tremendous skills. She also joined the Adolescent Girls programme and became a part of the Yole Girls Club. She was also selected as a RHESY facilitator and had the opportunity to educate her peers in the community. She spoke about how influential she became in the community due to this program. As her child grew older, she made the difficult decision to entrust his care to her mother so she could fully immerse herself in her craft and continue her journey of personal and professional growth.
Moreover, the PAYDP program provided Ramatu with essential education on Sexual and Reproductive Health, including how sexually transmitted infections are contracted and how to prevent teenage pregnancies. Additionally, she received training in public speaking, which equipped her with the skills to effectively communicate her experiences and inspire others. Ramata said “Through the PAYDP programme funded by UNFPA and Canada, I have become more assertive and confident and I have been able to educate my peers in the community”.
Now, as a facilitator within the program, Ramata is determined to educate her peers on what she received. She serves as a shining example of determination, demonstrating to young girls in her community that it’s possible to overcome adversity and achieve their dreams, even after experiencing teenage pregnancy and dropping out of school. By sharing her own story and journey of empowerment, Ramata empowers other young girls to strive for the best, prioritize their education, and pursue their aspirations with confidence and determination.
