The Cultural Group (Ghana Girls)

The emergence of a cultural group stemming from the Yole Girls’ club of the adolescent programme implemented by PAYDP and funded by UNFPA and Canada in Bubuashie. This is an indication that the power of community engagement and the promotion of cultural expression among young girls.

Initially, the Yole Girls’ Club provided a platform for young girls aged 10 to 19years to engage in various activities aimed at building their confidence, skills, and knowledge. During club meetings, the girls were encouraged to showcase their cultural heritage through dance performances and other artistic expressions. These activities not only served as opportunities for the girls to connect with their cultural roots but also fostered a sense of pride and belonging within the group. The girls were part of all the activities of PAYDP programmes under the UNFPA such as The Adolescent Girls Program, Yole Girls Speaks Clubs, RHESY(Reproductive Health Education for Young People),SRH Training and SGBV, where they performed their culture dances and acts.

Over time, the cultural performances became a highlight of club meetings and programs, with the girls eagerly preparing and rehearsing their dances and acts. These performances not only entertained but also served as a means of education and community engagement, as they often conveyed messages related to cultural values, social issues, or personal experiences

The popularity and success of the cultural performances eventually led to the formalization of the group as an official cultural ensemble. This recognition allowed them to be invited to perform at other programs and forums beyond the confines of the Girls’ Club, expanding their reach and impact within the community and beyond. They were part of TV Africa’s Amazing Child Competition where they emerged the 4th runner up and other competitions.

This evolution from a casual activity within the Girls’ Club to a recognized cultural group highlights the power of community-based initiatives in nurturing talent, fostering pride in cultural identity, and providing opportunities for youth to showcase their abilities on larger platforms. The cultural group’s journey serves as an inspiring example of how grassroots efforts can cultivate and celebrate the cultural heritage of a community while empowering its young members to shine brightly on stage and beyond.
